ADHD / ADD Definition
“ADHD is better defined as, constant, spontaneous, uncontrollable, overt, purposeless behavior unconsciously displayed by children”. (Calhoun, Greenwell & Chung) This is a simple definition but one that has held up for some time and is a good descriptor of how a child with ADHD acts. According to the 1994, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Ed. IV, (DSM-IV):
“ADHD is a Disruptive Behavior Disorder characterized by the presence of a set of chronic and impairing behavior patterns that display abnormal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, or their combination.”

Interventions
The most beneficial types of interventions with students diagnosed with ADHD focus on behavioral interventions. The goals for these individuals focus on being able to stay on task and being able to complete tasks. Cognitive-behavioral strategies are often used to help students improve social skills. These social skills can focus on a variety of interpersonal skills and can help students learn to improve their communication skills. Another key intervention for students with ADHD is training for parents. This training for the parents can help the parents encourage improved social behaviors. Training parents can also take the shape of helping parents develop behavioral plans, such as token economies, that can assist in reinforcing desired behaviors.
